Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache (FontCache3.0.0.0) Service Defaults in Windows 7

Optimizes performance of Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) applications by caching commonly used font data. WPF applications will start this service if it is not already running. It can be disabled, though doing so will degrade the performance of WPF applications.

Default Settings

Startup type: Manual
Display name:Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache
Service name:FontCache3.0.0.0
Service type:own
Error control:normal
Object:NT Authority\LocalService
Registry key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\FontCache3.0.0.0

Default Behavior

Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache is a Win32 service. In Windows 7 it won't be started if the user doesn't start it. When the Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache service is started, it is running as NT Authority\LocalService in its own process of PresentationFontCache.exe. If Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache fails to start, Windows 7 attempts to write the failure details into Event Log. Then Windows 7 startup should proceed and the user should be notified that the FontCache3.0.0.0 service is not running because of the error.

Restore Default Startup Configuration of Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache

1. Run the Command Prompt as an administrator.

2. Copy the command below, paste it into the command window and press ENTER:

The FontCache3.0.0.0 service is using the PresentationFontCache.exe file that is located in the C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v3.0\WPF directory. If the file is removed or corrupted, read this article to restore its original version from Windows 7 installation media.
