Function Discovery Provider Host (fdPHost) Service Defaults in Windows 7
The FDPHOST service hosts the Function Discovery (FD) network discovery providers. These FD providers supply network discovery services for the Simple Services Discovery Protocol (SSDP) and Web Services - Discovery (WS-D) protocol. Stopping or disabling the FDPHOST service will disable network discovery for these protocols when using FD. When this service is unavailable, network services using FD and relying on these discovery protocols will be unable to find network devices or resources.

Default Behavior
Function Discovery Provider Host is a Win32 service. In Windows 7 it won't be started if the user doesn't start it. When the Function Discovery Provider Host service is started, it is running as NT AUTHORITY\LocalService in a shared process of svchost.exe. Other system components, such as drivers and services, may run in the same process. If Function Discovery Provider Host fails to start, Windows 7 attempts to write the failure details into Event Log. Then Windows 7 startup should proceed and the user should be notified that the fdPHost service is not running because of the error.
